About Towner Eastbourne

​Towner Eastbourne is a leading contemporary art gallery on the south coast of England. Originally housed in an 18th-century manor house in the Old Town district of Eastbourne, the gallery relocated in 2009 to a purpose-built state-of-the-art facility near the Congress Theatre. Entry to Towner is free, and it provides a welcoming community space, winning Art Fund’ Museum of the Year in 2020. Towner Eastbourne is the largest purpose-built gallery in the South East.

Towner Gallery

Towner hosts major exhibitions, talks and events, attracting up to 212,000 visitors annually. The Towner Collection was established in 1920 when Alderman John Chisholm Towner bequest 20 paintings to the people of Eastbourne. Today, Towner has an ever-growing collection of 5000 works of modern British and international contemporary art, with a focus on landscape, female artists and moving image.

Towner Cinema

Towner Cinema was established in 2017, with the support of Arts Council England and Eastbourne Arts Circle. The cinema delivers a thoughtfully curated and engaging film programme ranging from mainstream titles to independent gems and classic titles. Equipped with a 4K HD projector & cinematic Dolby surround-sound the cinema is popular with guests, offering a more intimate and welcoming setting than multiplex cinemas. Towner Cinema draws over 30,000 visitors a year.

Our work with Towner Eastbourne

CloudConnX began working with Towner Eastbourne back in 2019, when they were looking to manage their own connectivity into to the site. At this time, Towner were looking for a connection that could support their offices as well as the public gallery. We were able to deliver a 100Mbit/s Full Fibre connection into the building providing them with reliable connectivity at a competitive price.

Getting the Cinema Connected

The Challenge

Until recently, Towner relied on hard disk copies of films to be delivered to the cinema by courier. Not only was this costly, but it could also lead to delays in films arriving on site. 

At the end of 2024, the team at Towner reached out to CloudConnX looking to move from receiving physical copies of films to being able to stream them over the Internet.

The Solution

CloudConnX worked with Towner Eastbourne to expand on their existing connectivity services, adding in a 1Gbit/s Full Fibre connection exclusively for the Cinema. This ensures that the Cinema always has bandwidth dedicated to the streaming of films. 

As CloudConnX already had physical connectivity into the building we were able to quickly and efficiently deploy an additional 1Gbit/s line for the Cinema, with no disruption to the daily running of the gallery or offices. Our previous experience working with broadcasters meant that we had a clear understanding of the type of connectivity and bandwidth requirements needed for this deployment. 

Towner Cinema showcased 192 different film titles last year, meaning that there are significant savings to be made in not having to rely on shipping physical copies of films to the site anymore. 

Towner decided to upgrade their existing 100Mbit/s connection serving the gallery and offices to a 1Gbit/s service at the same time as the cinema connection went live. This means that the Gallery, Offices and Cinema are all equipped with future-proofed Full Fibre connectivity moving forwards, enabling them to provide a seamless experience for their guests.
